A Leap into the Music Space: Directing for Yo-Yo Ma's Music Art Life Project
As we crossed the threshold into 2023, I set a goal for myself. After years of creating short films for brands and organizations, I wanted to venture into the music space and merge the cinematic storytelling I'm known for with the powerful language of music. Little did I know, a call would soon come that would bring this dream to fruition.
One day, my phone rang. On the other line was a request to direct a video for none other than the world-renowned cellist, Yo-Yo Ma, for his project 'Music Art Life.' I was elated. Yo-Yo Ma, a man whose music has been a constant companion for many and was currently on my infant Twin’s nighttime playlist, was now inviting me to join him on a unique journey, combining music, art, and life.
'Music Art Life' is an interactive virtual program designed for big thinkers, innovators, artists, dreamers, changemakers, and, of course, lovers of music, art, and J.S. Bach. Over the course of eight weeks, participants are treated to rich programming, including live sessions with Yo-Yo Ma, conversations with special guests, and weekly live community discussions1.
The heart of the program lies in the exploration of Bach's six cello suites, which Yo-Yo Ma refers to as his "constant musical companions." These timeless pieces have provided comfort and joy to many over the centuries, helping us navigate our search for meaning and purpose.
Each week, a new episode is released, each themed to complement one of Bach's suites, starting from 'Introduction to Music Art Life' to the final 'Epiphany'1. In these episodes, Yo-Yo Ma, along with four rising young cellists, takes the audience on a collaborative journey through the music, with Yo-Yo Ma leading live conversations with special guests throughout the program.
As the director of the interview portion, I was tasked with capturing Yo-Yo Ma' in a studio setting, intimately discussing his experience leading the experience, the music, and its meaning. Working with Yo-Yo Ma and the 'Music Art Life' team was an experience that I will forever cherish. I am proud to have contributed to a project that encourages individuals to seek truth, build trust, and serve one another through culture.
This year, I set out to venture into the music space, and I found myself in the most wonderful of sandboxes. I am excited to see where this path will lead and I look forward to sharing more of my journey with you.
Stay tuned for more updates and, in the meantime, I encourage you to explore the 'Music Art Life' project and immerse yourself in the beautiful convergence of music, art, and life.
